Catonsville field hockey remains unbeaten with win over Hereford

	by Derek Toney Catonsville High School secured a spot in the Baltimore County field hockey championship game, outlasting Hereford High, 3-2, in double overtime Tuesday afternoon. Senior Kendall McCoy scored with under four minutes in the second overtime for the Comets (11-1), who are 10-0 in county play with one game remaining against Loch Raven High Friday. Catonsville coach P.J. Harrison said her team was outplayed most of the game by the Bulls. “It was a gutsy game, both teams played with a lot of heart,” said Harrison. “I felt like Hereford dominated, they have some really strong defensive players. They were able to move the ball during regulation.”

The Comets forced overtime as Shelby Polk scored on an unassisted goal with 2 minutes, 15 seconds remaining in regulation. The teams played a scoreless 10-minute overtime session before McCoy found the ball after a brief scramble in front of Hereford’s goal, and put the winner past Bulls’ goalie Chelsea Lafond.

After a scoreless first half, Hereford had the game’s first tally as Celeste Dilferdinando scored on a penalty shot with 22:30 left. The Comets responded seconds later with Abby Sneeringer scored with an assist from Jackie Reymann with 22:10 remaining. The Bulls (6-2-2) regained the lead at 2-1 with 15:57 left on an unassisted goal by Lindsay Riordon.
